What Does the Scan Examine?
Ultrasound can assess the thyroid gland, cervical lymph nodes, salivary glands and other accessible neck structures. The examination is tailored to your symptoms and the area of clinical concern.
Thyroid Gland
The thyroid is assessed for its size, overall appearance and any focal abnormalities such as nodules or cysts. Identified findings are measured and characterised using ultrasound and Doppler where appropriate.
Cervical Lymph Nodes
The accessible cervical lymph-node chains are examined for enlarged or sonographically abnormal lymph nodes. Any relevant nodes are assessed for size, shape, internal appearance and vascularity.
Salivary Glands
The submandibular and parotid glands can be assessed for enlargement, focal lesions, inflammation and visible ductal obstruction, including accessible salivary stones where present.
Neck Lumps and Swellings
A palpable neck lump or area of swelling can be examined and correlated with the patient’s area of concern. Ultrasound may help determine whether it arises from a lymph node, salivary gland, thyroid or another superficial soft-tissue structure.

What Happens During a Thyroid and Neck Ultrasound?
Before your scan, your sonographer will discuss your symptoms, medical history and the reason for your examination.
You will lie comfortably with your neck gently extended. Ultrasound gel is applied to the skin and the probe moved carefully over the front and sides of your neck.
The thyroid gland and surrounding neck structures will be assessed. Any nodules, cysts or other areas of concern will be examined and measured, and Doppler ultrasound may be used to assess blood flow where appropriate. Relevant lymph nodes within the neck will also be assessed.
The examination is painless and usually takes around 20 minutes.
Your findings will be explained where appropriate, and your detailed digital report will usually be provided the same day.
Ultrasound provides detailed assessment of the thyroid, accessible cervical lymph nodes, salivary glands and superficial neck structures, but it cannot identify every cause of a neck lump or symptom.
Ultrasound cannot determine the tissue diagnosis of every nodule or mass. Depending on the findings, further assessment, blood tests, specialist review, cross-sectional imaging or needle sampling may be recommended.
