Gallbladder Symptoms & Ultrasound Assessment
Gallbladder problems are a common cause of abdominal pain, particularly in the upper right side of the abdomen. Symptoms can often come on after eating, especially fatty foods, and may vary in intensity.
A private ultrasound scan is the most effective first step in assessing the gallbladder and identifying potential issues such as gallstones or inflammation.
Common Gallbladder Symptoms
You may benefit from a scan if you are experiencing:
- Pain in the upper right abdomen
- Pain after eating, particularly fatty foods
- Nausea or digestive discomfort
- Bloating or fullness
- Pain that radiates to the back or shoulder
If symptoms are ongoing or worsening, further investigation is recommended.
What Could It Be?
Gallbladder-related symptoms may be caused by:
- Gallstones
- Gallbladder inflammation (cholecystitis)
- Sludge within the gallbladder
- Bile duct issues

What We Assess During Your Scan
During your abdominal ultrasound, we will assess:
- Gallbladder structure and contents
- Presence of gallstones or sludge
- Surrounding organs including liver and bile ducts
- Signs of inflammation or abnormalities
You will receive a clear explanation during your appointment, along with a detailed written report.
Our Scan Appointment
What happens during a gallbladder scan?
Your sonographer will discuss your symptoms and medical history, apply gel to your upper abdomen and move the ultrasound probe over the skin. You may be asked to change position or briefly hold your breath to improve the images.
How should I prepare?
Follow the preparation instructions in your appointment confirmation. Contact our team before your appointment if you are unsure about fasting or have medical needs that affect preparation.
A gallbladder scan is performed externally over the abdomen. Your findings will be explained and documented, with advice about medical follow-up where appropriate.
