Your Ultrasound Appointment: What to Expect

Your sonographer will discuss your symptoms and relevant history, explain the examination and confirm your consent. Tell us about any support or communication needs, and ask questions at any point.

Do I need a GP referral?

You can book most scans directly. If you are unsure which examination is appropriate, contact our team before booking.

How do I prepare?

Preparation depends on your scan. You may need to fast or attend with a full bladder. Follow the instructions in your appointment confirmation.

Is a transvaginal scan compulsory?

No. It may be offered for a pelvic examination where appropriate, with your consent. Your sonographer will explain the options and any limitations of an abdominal-only scan.

When will I receive my results?

Findings are usually explained during or after your appointment, with a detailed digital report usually provided the same day.

What if I need further care or a rescan?

Your sonographer will explain any findings that need further assessment and your report will set out the recommended next steps. With your consent, we can share it with your GP. Where our qualifying urgent suspected-cancer referral pathway applies, MedHealth arranges and funds the partner GP consultation. Routine GP appointments and further care are charged separately. Clinically indicated rescans are free within 12 months, subject to the Care Promise terms.

Who can book and how long does it take?

Our Fareham service is for women and men aged 18 and over. Appointments range from 20 to 45 minutes depending on the scan; the duration, price and available times are shown before booking.
